The QIAamp Viral RNA Mini Kit allows purification of viral nucleic acids from cell-free fluid samples. Examples of viral nucleic acids that can be isolated with this kit include, but are not limited to, RNA from hepatitis A, C, and D¨CG viruses, HIV, BVDV, and enteroviruses. Samples can be processed using either a microcentrifuge or the QIAvac 24 or QIAvac 6S vacuum manifold. To guarantee RNA integrity, samples are lysed under highly denaturing conditions to inactivate RNases. Recoveries of up to 99% permit detection of less than 100 copies of viral RNA by nested RT-PCR (see figure "Amplification of RNA from Plasma"). Table "Example of Viral RNA Recovery" shows that the QIAamp Viral RNA Mini Kit provides 100% detection rate of HCV RNA from a 100-copy/ml sample.
For purification of viral DNA from cells, QIAamp DNA Blood Kits or the QIAamp DNA Mini Kit should be used; for purification of viral RNA from cells, either the QIAamp RNA Blood Mini Kit or a suitable RNeasy Kit should be used. See also the QIAamp Selection Guide.

The QIAamp Viral RNA Mini Kit was used to isolate RNA from serum. HCV RNA was then amplified and detected using the Roche AMPLICOR HCV v2.0 Kit. These data were accepted by the German regulatory authority Paul Ehrlich Institute for validation of QIAamp Viral RNA Kits for sample preparation in HCV RNA screening of donated blood. Complete validation includes determination of sensitivity, precision, reproducibility, and robustness.
