New breakthroughs in genomics and sequencing
technology have been made since the 2006 International Conference on Genomics
(ICG) held in Hangzhou, China. Recent
discoveries from the international research consortium ENCODE has reshaped our understanding of how the human genome
functions. These findings include the discovery that the majority of the DNA in
the human genome is transcribed into RNA, and that these transcripts
extensively overlap one another. The data also indicates that the human genome
contains very little unused sequences and is a complex interwoven network in
which genes are just one of many types of DNA sequences that have a functional
impact. These new discoveries will drive the continued development of accurate,
cost-effective and high-throughput DNA sequencing technologies to decipher the
functions of the complex genome for applications in clinical medicine and
health care. The new DNA sequencing technologies will also serve as the impetus
for investigations in comparative genomics, metagenomics and the Cancer Genome
Project.
The 2007 ICG will focus on new developments in
genomics and genome technology. Complementary to Sanger sequencing, the
newly-developed DNA sequencing systems have already found wide applications in
genome biology, ranging from whole genome sequencing to tag sequencing for the
investigation of gene regulation to digital gene expression to discover rare
and important genes that are responsible for specific biological functions and
processes. More than 200 leading scientists in genome science and technology
from around the world will be gathered in Shenzhen City to stimulate further
development of this dynamic field for the benefit of our environment and global
population. As one of the fastest growing cities in the world, Shenzhen is a particularly inspiring site for this conference because
its rapid development mirrors that of genome technology in the 21st century. We welcome you all to the 2007 ICG in Shenzhen!
