This review highlights the evolving role of sexological therapy in erectile dysfunction (ED), emphasizing its complementary value alongside pharmacological treatments. Historically dominated by psychoanalytic approaches, ED management shifted toward integrative methods combining medication and psychological interventions. The article underscores the importance of addressing psychological, relational, and sexual factors in ED through cognitive-behavioral, systemic, and integrative therapies, aiming to enhance patient outcomes through holistic care strategies.
Erectile dysfunction (ED) treatment has transitioned from isolated psychoanalytic approaches to integrative strategies combining pharmacotherapy and psychosocial interventions. Initially, Freud’s theories shaped ED management through mid-20th century psychoanalysis, later challenged by Masters and Johnson’s behavioral therapies emphasizing partner involvement. Despite pharmaceutical advancements, psychological factors such as relationship dynamics and mental health remain critical in ED etiology. Modern integrative models merge medication (e.g., PDE5 inhibitors) with cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) or systemic therapy, addressing both physiological and psychological dimensions. Historical shifts from psychosexual exclusivity to holistic care reflect growing recognition of multifactorial ED causes. Evidence suggests that combining treatments enhances efficacy, particularly for patients resistant to monotherapy. The review advocates for personalized, integrative approaches balancing pharmacological symptom relief with psychosocial interventions to optimize patient outcomes.
